Basin’s Backyard Garden bumper crop, door buster zucchinis, go to Welcome House

Door buster zucchini, carried by Chris Gessele. Each of these zucchini weighs five pounds.

The Basin’s Backyard Gardeners harvested 118 pounds in the garden today – potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers, peppers, and zucchini to beat the bank. We weighed the two largest zucchini on their own – and they weighed 10 pounds. Wow!

Amanda Dvorak, Chris Gessele, Andrew Brown, and Tracie Bettenhausen did the picking… while an unknown angel left some celery for us to donate!

We took the veggies to Welcome House. Pamela Scherf, the director/case manager at Welcome House, says they house four families at any one time, and up to 23 people total. Sometimes they are referred to from other agencies like the Abused Adult Resource Center, and sometimes people show up, hoping to find help.

Scherf says one of the residents had been hoping to bake with zucchini – and now she’ll certainly have enough!

Hearty harvesters.

Gorgeous peppers!

Pamela Scherf, director and case manager at Welcome House, says they’ll put the veggies to good use.
